Corrie Chronicles - Student Teaching #4

Considering it's been over a week since my last update, I thought it about time to finally send another one out. Sorry to have kept you all in the dark for so long, but the pace is really starting to pick up. I'm teaching full time now - well, as full time as 4 classes and a spontaneous school can be. Starting last Wednesday I've officially taken over the English classroom! Look out kids - it's no more Miss nice Hockaday...ha ha - yeah right!! I'm about as mean as a ... uh ...some really not mean thing! ;) Anyways, it's been fun. Last week was a little rough, but I think I've worked out the issues and established some authority w/ the kiddos.     Part of my issue last week was that we all had just come back from winter retreat where I had been my usual self. As most of you know, camp is my thing; I mean the authoritative facade falls away and I'm just a crazy, excitable, fun-loving, game-playing girl! I mean you can't expect me to be the p

Corrie Chronicles - Student Teaching #3

Well, two weeks down - only 7 more to go. But really it's flown! And so much has happened. Considering the amount of escapades I have to report I'm limiting myself to short one liners or at most a single paragraph. But don't worry: you won't be gipped of your laughs. Rather you're getting a smorgus board of humorous incidents! Okay, well, so first incident was, I think, Tuesday when I was sitting in on the 1st grade class for observational purposes. The cute little kiddos were learning about their eyes. And the teacher came up to one of the kids and asked, "Caleb, what do you like to use your eyes for? What do you like to look at?" The little boy got a smirk on his face, cast a glance in my direction to make sure I was listening, and looked back at his teacher and said, "I like to look at you." :) Obviously, it made me smile. Today, Mrs. Winter told me that one lady came up to her at church and asked how the foreign exchange student was doin

Corrie's Chronicles - Student Teaching #2

Well, a whole week has gone by - A Whole WEEK! If this is any sign of how the rest of the 8 weeks are going to go I shall have no recollection of any of it due to the whirl-windedness of it all!! I must say that I really am enjoying myself - I love the kids even though many have already figured out that they can walk all over me (what they don't know is that I won't be so nice when I start teaching for real! mwa ha ha;). Anyways, in my time here I have found that the most insignificant things in life can truly have the greatest impact. Take a pair of high heels for instance...before leaving Northland my fellow English major, Jen, and I were expressing our insecurities about truly looking the part of a teacher. Mrs. Coats' advice (in part) was to invest in a nice pair of pumps. Totally contrary to everything I have ever worn before, I took her up on her advice and bought myself a very cute pair of brown high heels. My mom, of course, objected; insisting I was going to

Well, my friends, student teaching has begun!  And as promised, I've set about to record and relate the exciting, funny, and just plain random events that I seem to find myself in. I know you're not missing me yet, because your still in your nice cozy homes and not back to school yet, but I figured I'd better start before I get too far behind... In spite of the fact that I'm supposed to be only observing for the first two weeks, I've already been given random assignments: many of which don't even pertain to school. Take last night for instance: I had been asked by my host family (the Winters) if I would be willing to or desiring to join their church choir. I assured them that I would love to (especially since I would have to come to practices anyways, since the whole family is involved), but I wasn't sure if I could or should start this week because I've an annoying cold that has prevented me from even speaking much of late. They asked me what part
